This is the best saw for the money out there. Runs great for the smaller projects.

motor runs good but junky saw
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I have owned this saw 1 week and I am already buying a new bar. I think for light use this is a fine chain saw but I thought it would handle a few cords of wood for just one winter. On the upside the saw always starts easily and the motor runs well. On the downside, the bar is very wimpy and susceptible to heat/bending damage. Also, the hold down screw will not tighten sufficiently on my saw – I have to frequently re-tighten the chain to prevent it from falling off. Yes, chains will naturally loosen when they get warm but this saw is simply not holding the bar in place. The oiler seems to clog very easily so I have to keep a constant eye on that as well. I would return the saw if I had bought it locally but I don’t think it is worth shipping back. I have talked to 3 people this week who own this saw and all have had chain and bar problems. Maybe the replacement bar from Oregon will be better quality than the original (or maybe not), but I am still stuck with a poor adjustment mechanism for chain tension. I was so close to buying a good saw (stihl farm boss or above) but I just needed a saw for this winter. Only slightly older Poulan saws are much better – I have used several of the older ones without any problems. I am really amazed that this saw has relatively good reviews. I have owned several chain saws over the past 30 years or so and this has been the most troublesome of the bunch by far.

Ordered this item on Sunday using the normal ground shipping and received it on Wednesday. I never owned a chain saw before so I read the owners manual and followed the instructions. The saw worked perfectly with no drama. I believe it is a fantastic light duty saw at a very reasonable price.

    A disposable chainsaw
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I got the chainsaw out of necessity. It did exaclty what I expected and then some.

I used it once/twice and it was awesome. Once we moved I’d use it 3-4 times a week (and still under 3 gallons of fuel total) the chainsaw went belly up. Took it to a trusted show they informed me it had blown up. I then found out I had 2 year warranty on a 18 month old saw. Took to authorized dealer they told me it was carburator and not blown up at all and by taking it to the previous shop I voided my warranty. Yeah, my mistake there, but with no more than 3 gallons of gas in 18 months this should have never happened! So, now I am out $20 service call and a $139 chainsaw. My wife told me to buy a Stihl and the authorized service shop recommended Echo and then Stihl.

For sale or trade one broke PP3516AVX. The PP should be POP for Piece of SxxT!

My last Poulan product, unless they give me one.

Good chain saw, but hard to start
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I just used the saw for the first time to cut up a small pine tree (10 to 11 inches in diameter). The saw worked fine, and I would give it an excellent rating except for one thing. It was hard to start and did not idle properly.

There is a 6-step startup routine.

    1. Slowly press primer bulb 6 times.

    2. Pull choke out fully.

    3. Pull starter rope 5 pulls.

    4. Pull choke to half choke after engine tries to start.

    5. Pull rope until engine starts.

    6. Allow engine to warm for 30 seconds; then squeeze throttle to set normal idle.

For the first 15 minutes of use, my saw did not idle. It just stalled out. So I had to repeat the startup routine many times. All those rope pulls are a good workout for an old guy like me. After 15 minutes, the saw did idle.

Maybe this was just an issue of “breaking in” the saw, and it will start easier and idle better the next time I use it. If I had it to do over, though, I would look for a saw that was easier to start.

    Problem Machine–
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This was the third Poulan I have bought. I borrowed the first one to a friend (some friend) and he didn’t bother to use mixed gas and ruined the engine. I wore the second one out after years of hard use and didn’t hesitate to get another Poulan. I was really looking forward to the new anti-vibration feature and the the easy to adjust chain tightner. Took it out of the box, filled it with fuel and chain oil, pumped the primed, pulled the choke and with 2 pulls it popped right off. I was like a little kid in a candy store. I had another new Poulan.

The next day, much to my dismay, there was a puddle of oil on the garage floor.

I called Poulan and they said they had changed the chain oiler from a pump system to a gravity feed and it was always going to leak. I explained that I really didn’t want a puddle of oil on my floor and they suggested that I “Drain the oil each time you use it!!!!!” So much for that idea and the saw went back to the dealer.

it’s a shame that a company, such as Poulan, can advertise all their great new feature and forget to tell you that they saved $.50 per machine so you can have an oil spot on your garage floor, or in your truck, or the trunk of your car. I would never buy another Poulan when they over look the little things that meam so much to a consumer—

This item was listed as a new product; however it was a refurbished product. The chain did not even fit the equipment. The product was returned for a full refund without any problem.

    Great for the occasional user
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I received the saw last week and spent the weekend taking down 4 trees-each about 40 feet tall. The saw performed flawlessly.

Starting: It was easy to start-a quick prime, a couple pulls at full choke and a couple pulls at half choke had the saw running.

Use: The saw is very predictable and has enough power for most occasional users. The chain jumped off once, but that’s my fault-I should have tightened it. Initially the chain needs tightened after every 10 minutes of operation (not unusual). The tool-less tightener made quick work of tightening the chain and made it easy to put it back in place after it jumped off. After an hours use the chain didn’t need any further adjustment.

Fuel use: I was able fall 2 trees and remove the limbs before I needed to refuel. This was about 45 minutes runtime on a tank of fuel-very acceptable in my opinion.

It’s a great saw for homeowner use-lightweight, easy to handle and predictable.

saw worked right out of the box
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I followed the directions in getting my new chainsaw ready to use, and it started right up. I use it around the house to cut up downed white pines, birches, and other trees not too large. It has been working just fine for my casual use.

  10. Robert Clark Says:

    Good Chain Saw
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was impressed with what came out of the box, a fully useable chain saw. I just junked a 4 year old Troy Bilt 16″ which is one of the worst chainsaws I have ever seen, so anything would be an improvement. I do like this chain adjustment and the ease of which one may have access to the spark arrestor (a major problem with all saws these days). It runs good and the chain that came with it is a new type of saw and it cuts through some tough vine maple like no tomorrow. Probably not a saw for a lot of heavy work, but good for the rural land owner needing something to clear fences and do the job.

  11. H. Wilday Says:

    A good saw
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I received my new Poulan Pro PP3516AVX 16-Inch 35cc 2-Cycle Gas Powered Anti-Vibration Chain Saw in very good time and I gassed it up and tested it. It seemed OK but I didn’t get to use it right away. When I did get to use it I was impressed with the anti vibration feature. I also liked the tooless chain tensioning feature.

I just had a couple of dissatisfactions. One was that when I was useing it and had the revs up, sometimes when I released the throtel triger, the engin would die. This happened more than I liked. The other thing was that the chain came off after about an hour of use. Now I know I had checked the tention before I started, but since this happened I check it way more often. I guess its possible that I didn’t have the barr thght enough.

Can’t really add much more to what others have said about what a nice product this is. Instructions / use / maintenance all easy. Saw started right up for me, and operated just fine to fell my first tree (plus trim others in my yard). Chain has very nice sharp teeth, and have stayed sharp through my first project. Yep . . . chain does need to be retensioned often, and also uses a lot of bar oil. My only dissatisfaction was that it arrived with the chain set too tight, (would not move at all around te bar), and I had to retension before being able to use – - – but, the retension process is easy and quick.

    Worked great for five seconds
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Having used a Poulan Saw for the last 20 years I naturally chose a Poulan when I decided it was finally time to modernize. This saw started right up when I followed the instructions. When I went to rev it up to attack a tree it immediately stalled. Subsequent pulls on the rope were clearly not turning the crankshaft, there was no force and the flywheel just spun freely.

The problem turned out to be a machined key that is part of the flywheel. It had completely disintegrated. I am not talking about the old style where the key was a separate square rod. This key is part of the flywheel casting. When I disassembled it the nut holding the flywheel to the crank was loose. I’m guessing it was shipped that way and this allowed the flywheel to move which is turn destroyed the key.

Pretty shoddy design and manufacture but then what do you expect for this price?

This saw is terrible-it took 3 hours to do a 1 hour job because the chain kept coming off.Doing this small job the chain came off 6 times. If your not a pro at putting on a chain-you will be if you buy this chainsaw.Would not reccomend it to know one-Poulan ought to recall this saw as a safety hazzard.

I purchased the poulan pro 3516avx from Amazon.com. After it arrived I followed the instructions and tried to start it up. On the first pull the cord did not recoil! I called the “HELP” number on the saw and the told me to take it in for warranty service, although IT HAD NEVER BEEN STARTED! I called the support number directly at Poulan same answer NO SUPPORT! I called Amazon and they cheerfully shipped me a new saw IMMEDIATLY,(arrived in 3 days) and apoligized for the incovenience. Thank-you that was much better. New saw performs very well, No further problems, no thanks to Poulan.

This saw has performed beautifully. It starts right up every time, hot or cold. The light weight and excellent balance make it very easy to use, even for someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience with chain saws.

I received my Poulan chain saw in a short time after ordering. It works as advertised and has performed flawlessly so far. I was a bit disappointed that it did not come with a carrying case, something that is almost a necessity and something I will have to order in addition to the saw. It would have been nice if the ad had suggested adding a carrying case to the order, making it clear that it did not come with the saw.

Generally happy with the saw. The chain tension adjuster seems to go limp in a short time and must be adjusted frequently. New chain but chains on my old saw did not require so much adjustment.

    Great value and performance
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After suffering miserably trying to keep my old Poulan 2000 running, I was very hesitant about buying another Poulan product. But with the ice storms in the Northeast, I desperately needed a reliable saw. After reading the reviews here and comparing other brands, I decided to try this Poulan Pro model.

First, the value is hard to beat. I particularly like the fact that you don’t need any tools to tighten the chain. It was fully assembled and I literally took it out of the box, followed the quick start instructions provided, and it started in just a few pulls. The instruction manual is very good, with very simple operating guidelines. The saw idles beautifully. The chain needed tightening after a few cuts but that is to be expected from a new saw.

I can’t comment on overall reliability since I haven’t had it that long, but so far so good. I am very pleased.

    Bad redesign
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I used to have Poulan Pro 16″ chain saw. It worked great for the time I owned it (2 years probably)until someone stole it.

After Thanksgiving, I bought a brand new 16 ” chain saw, Poulan Pro,same model, MADE IN CHINA, at Northern Tools. However, this is a redesigned one with new style: the power switch and Choke located side by side. On the old style, the choke level is under the handle.

Over all, the material and workmanship looked cheap. The box(container) was cheap too, with thin plastic and sharp edges.I accepted, because the price was cheap too: 99.99 in compare with 149.99 I bought 2 years ago.

I filled with (mixed) fresh gas, chain bar oil, and tried to start the equipment. The pulls were very rough… After 1/2 hour of trying finally the engine ran for 1 minute and stop. Then, it died even I had tried to start it many times. I undertanded it may eventually be flooded but this is definitely badly re-designed with very cheap material, bad workmanship. (The Poulan Pro I had before: the pulls were very smooth, and the machine started righ after a few easy pulls).

I return this chain saw and never by any Poulan machines anymore.

Got it for my husband for Christmas last year. He has had numerous chain saws over the last 25 years. This is is his favorite. He was amazed at ease of cut. His comment is in the title “This thing cuts like the tree is butter”. And yes, he went and cut down stuff that did not need it just because the saw is so sweet.

  26. R. Hagan Says:

    Good Purchase
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Disclaimer: This is the 1st chainsaw I’ve ever purchased and used at any length. My first introduction to chainsaws was rocky, to say the least, so I was hesitant to even buy one. However, a recent move to 2 heavily wooded acres pretty much necessitated a chainsaw.

I’ve used this saw for about 5 months now and I’ve probably felled 20 trees. I’m still using the original bar but I have purchased 2 additional chains. Probably against all better judgment I haven’t sharpened any of my 3 chains to date and I still have one chain that hasn’t been used. My most recent use really showed that I need a sharper chain.

Anyway, to get to the performance, this chainsaw has been great. It seems to use lots of chain oil, but that’s to be expected I think. The gas use is within reason for sure because I’ve only used 1.5 gallons so far and that’s with regular use. The largest tree I’ve taken down by myself was probably 3 feet in diameter. The 16″ bar was obviously not long enough for such a monster tree but if you take it slow and cut from both sides it’s manageable.

Overall, my $136 purchase has been recouped many times over. The saw is light, easy to maneuver, and seems safe (as much as a chainsaw can be I guess). I haven’t had any close calls yet (knock on wood) and I feel comfortable using it. The brake mechanism seems forceful and the rotating chain comes to a complete stop measured in tenths of second. The kickback protection is a nice addition and while I haven’t seen it in use, thank goodness, the idea and function behind it seems like it would work a charm. Highly recommended. I’m sure that there are more professional and longer lasting options out there, but then again I don’t have any plans to use this saw more than is necessary. Once I get my lot in shape I plan to clean the saw back to as new condition and hold it in the shed for a long time to come. After taking down some large trees I’ve contemplated the idea that maybe an 18″ bar would have been more the sensible choice, but ultimately I always realize that the 16″ has been more than adequate and it seems like the shorter length makes it more of a joy to use, not to mention safer.

  27. Michael Mcbeath Jr. Says:

    Great tool!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Granted this is the first chainsaw I have owned, but it’s the best I have ever used.

I bought this for the purpose of cutting wood while camping.

The saw is compact and doesn’t take up much space. It’s light weight making it easy to carry. It starts easily and runs smooth. The anti-vibration really does make a difference.

A couple of things to keep in mind. You will need to fill it with bar oil before you can use it. The saw comes with 2-cycle engine oil to mix with the gas, but you will have get your own bar oil. The oil that is included also contains a fuel stabilizer so you can store your saw without having to drain the fuel, or purchase separate fuel stabilizer.

This does not come with a carrying case, but you can pick one up for around $30.

    Overall a great product.

Poulan Pro 16″ 38cc Anti Vibration Chain Saw
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my first gas powered chain saw. The Poulon is fantastic. No kick back, no vibration, very smooth operation. Has a lot of safety features. Cuts through trees like butter. The only thing is that when you first use it, you have to re-adjust the chain tension, but this is what you would have to do with any new chain. The chain tension adjustment wheel makes this easy to do. Since this is my first gas chain saw, I don’t have experience with others; however, it sure does use the bar and chain oil. Then again, I was cutting so many dead trees and branches that had accumulated in the woods on our property that I needed to refill the oil. I had to buy the carrying case separately. Would have been nice if they included it since I believe it is a necessary accessory. I would highly recommend this product.

As far from “Pro” as you can get
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased this chainsaw for my landscaping business because the recent storms in Georgia caused many fallen trees in my clients’ yards. It’s supposedly a “professional grade” chainsaw, but the blade dulled after 3 sections of a tree were cut! I followed all the instructions, put the right gas and oil in it, and started it correctly. It cut the first section like butter, but after that, it got slower and slower until eventually it just started burning the wood instead of cutting it.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend this chainsaw to anyone, no matter what job needs to be done. I returned it to the store and bought a Homelite 18” chainsaw from Home Depot. It’s the same price as the Poulon Pro, but it works SO much better!

I recently purchased this saw for light duty work around the house. I’ll use it for pruning and maybe some fire wood work.

This saw was packaged well and came fully assembled. The instructions cover most aspects of care and also provide guidence on how to safely use the machine.

I filled the saw with fuel and synthetic 2 stroke oil (provided) following the instructions. The engine started easily and ran well with very little smoke.

The only negetives that I might mention are the lack of inital bar oil and no mention of fuel capacity. I had to go to the store to purchase bar oil even though a first batch of 2 stroke oil was provided. Also, a whole gallon of fuel needs to be mixed with two stroke oil since the tank capacity is unknown. Other than these minor issues this is a very good machine that should last for years.

Awesome for yard trimming and/or firewood
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If you are looking for a chain shaw for around the yard and cutting firewood, this is the real deal. It’s small, light, easy to use, and has plenty of power to cut down trees when necessary. I bought it to clear out about eight 30-foot trees to install a fence, and that was a snap. A lumberjack might consider it to be lightweight, but that was what I was looking for.

The saw starts and runs well, cuts well, and that is what I wanted. I have owned Poulan and Craftsman saws, still do, and for me, at least, I can depend on them to start, run and cut. The only hitch was delivery: UPS delivered it in the country, 5 miles from my home – thank goodness the recipient was honest and called me. Larry Gillingham

  34. D. Miller Says:

Saw works as advertised; great value for the money
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This chainsaw lives up to what I expected. Follow the priming instructions and it starts as advertised. I’m using it at an elevation of 8800 feet. With a sharp chain it cuts pretty well, but trying to rush the cut will bog down the engine. That’s not surprising though as each 1000 foot of altitude decreases power by about 3%. I knew that going in and might have been better off with a larger engined saw, but the weight was a tradeoff. Main thing is I’m still happy with the saw after using it about every other weekend for three months clearing dead and downed trees on some mountain property. I should mention the anti-vibration mounting is quite good. There are some other Poulans (and other makes) that do not have this.
